As true verbs do not show gender, a verb like **cikSepa चिक्षेप may mean "he threw", "she threw", or "it threw". Nevertheless I gloss those as "he threw". The reader or readeress is supposed to use common sense to figure out when all genders are included and when they aren't.
But that is not Politically Correct. Shouldn't you translate "she threw" half of the time, just to avoid suspicions of sexism?
Well, maybe it is not politically correct, but it is sure PC. /pANini teaches us that in general statements, the masculine grammatical gender subsumes all genders. To explain this principle with an English example, in Sanskrit, statements of the type "everybody raised his hand" are always PC, even if everybody is female, while "everybody raised her hand" is PC only if everybody is female.
You see, we have been 3000 years in this business, so we are extremely conservative and reluctant to change the rules. Think of this as a strong desire to keep "backwards compatibility".
