/iti / इति

The word /iti means 'unquote'. As in —

tasyAham anujo bhrAtA vibhISaNa iti zrutaH

'I am his younger brother, known as "vibhISana".'

Sometimes it quotes literal words said —

sAdhu sAdhv iti rAmasya tat karma samapUjayan

They praised that feat of rAma राम, saying "sAdhu sAdhu साधु साधु".

Othertimes it just quotes what people think —

Then, when the demons knew "he is sated", they gathered before him.
(When the demons were sure that he was no longer hungry, they went near him warily.)
