@modern pronunciation of the anusvAra

Beginners should get used to read aloud the anusvAra letter like this —

• when it is followed by y य् v व् r र् l ल् z श् S ष् s स् h ह्, say a hum;
• when before a pause or a vowel, it is just a misspelling for m म्, so say m; म्
• elsewhere it will be followed by a /Jay letter: say M ं as the nasal /savarNa of that /Jay.

So if it's spelled like M ं d द्, read nd न्द्. See also examples of how to read aloud the M.

If the M ं comes from a padafinal m म् changed by monus मोनुस्, /pANini allows the hum pronunciation. Beginners should never hum those, but some pro zloka chanters sometimes do it. It is not incorrect, just unadvisable.
