@spelling of anusvArasyayayi change

According to /pANini you may if you like pronounce the word final /anusvAra applying the anusvArasy... change, like

kiJ cid AtyayikaG kAryan teSAn tvan darzanaG kuru | (A)

or, if you like, without applying it at all, like —

kihum cid Atyayikahum kAryahum teSAhum tvahum darzanahum kuru | (B)

This freedom does not extend to the /anusvAra that is not padafinalkumbhaH must be always pronounced kumbhA , never ku humbhaH .

Now the fun part. Even though this padafinal hum before a stop or nasal is allowed by pANini , most people talk nearly always like (A), never like (B).

And even funnier — since the middle ages, most people not only spell like (B), but they also spell kumbhaH as kuM bhaH .

Now the crazy part. Since one or two centuries ago, most Sanskrit professors have been teaching that a padafinal nasal sound must always be spelled like (B) if it was originally a n and changed into a different sound because of monusvAraH and anusvArasy..., while all other nasal sounds must be spelled like they are said.

This spelling rule is quite annoying to apply in practice, so lots of people, some of which speak fluent sanskrit, don't give a damn about it and spell all nt sounds as M t , no matter if they are padafinal or not and no matter if they come from m or from n .

In the hope of saving beginners some confusion, in this website I allow the Roman letters to show the anusvArasy... sound change —

kiJ cid AtyayikaG kAryan teSAn tvan darzanaG kuru |
किं चिदात्ययिकं कार्यं तेषां त्वं दर्शनं कुरु ।

however, in the hope of saving myself from some RSi ऋषि cursing me to be a chamaeleon for a hundred years, the Indian letters show the bookish official spelling with kiM किं kaM कं yaM यं SAM षां tvaM त्वं naM नं.
