tatpuruSaH तत्पुरुषः ONPANINI 21022

The /tatpuruSa start here.

In the next sUtras, understand the words "it is allowed to join these words into a compound, and the compound will be a /tatpuruSa."

A /tatpuruSa compound, informally explained, is one that means a particular kind of its second half. As for instance, a blackbird is a sort of bird, and a rowboat is a sort of boat. Some Sanskrit examples: a **rAjapuruSas राजपुरुषस् ("policeman", literally "kingsman") is a sort of puruSaH पुरुषः (man), and a kRSNazakuniH कृष्णशकुनिः ("crow", literally "blackbird") is a sort of zakuniH शकुनिः (bird).

The above explanation is supposed to help us tell apart a /tatpuruSa from other sorts of compounds. A redhead is not a sort of head, so it is not a /tatpuruSa (the word "redhead" is a /bahuvrIhi). Twenty-eight is not a sort of eight (the word "twenty-eight" is a /dvandva). this explanationis not used by the grammar at all.
