The real translation of sUtra ekAca::up... is —

/ekAc roots that are chanted with low accent in the /dhAtupATha (are exceptions to ArdhadhAtuk...).

And that would be of help if you were able to sing the /dhAtupATha from memory with the right accents. But I don't think anyone can do that in this kaliyuga कलियुग. So the other way of apply this sUtra is: first you type your root in /devanAgarI. Then you go to ashtadhyayi dhAtu page and look for that root. If it has one REAL vowel and no high accent (like say 8.10 DukRJ डुकृञ् karaNe करणे), then it is /aniT. Otherwise it is /seT.
