@Coulson on reduplication

Coulson chapter 13 summarizes the most used rules concerning reduplication as follows —

* reduplicate only the vowel and what is before it (by ekAcodvepr...) —

yudh युध्yuyudh युयुध्

* but if there is a cluster there, only the first reduplicates (see halAdizzeSaH) —

pracch प्रच्छ्papracch पप्रच्छ्

(but in clusters of s स् + stop, reduplicate the stop (see zarpUrvAHkhay...) —

stu → tuSTu

sthA → tasthA)

* shorten long vowels and diphthongs (by hrasvaH)

nI नी → ninI

sev सेव् → siSev (with eca::igghrasv...)

* but rootfinal e o ai reduplicate as a

mlai म्लैmamlai मम्लैmamlA मम्ला

* deaspirate aspirates (by abhyAsecarca) —

bhid भिद् → **bibhid- बिभिद्

* /ku and h ह् become /cu (by kuhozcuH) —

kram क्रम् + /liT → **cakram- चक्रम्

hu हु → **juhu- जुहुॱ

These rules have lots of exceptions, as the sUtras teach. See sanyataH, **ISatus ईषतुस्, **iyeSa इयेष, **Ijus ईजुस्, **jajAgAra जजागार.
