hrasvasya guNaH

ह्रस्वस्य गुणः ONPANINI 73108

(Before /sambuddhi,) replace i u with /guNa.

**RSi- ऋषिॱ + /sambuddhi
RSe- ऋषेॱ + /sambuddhi by this rule
!**RSe ऋषे "hey seer", by eGhrasvAtsamb...

**guru- गुरुॱ + /sambuddhi
!**guro गुरो "hey teacher", same steps

**mahAbAhu- महाबाहुॱ + /sambuddhi!**mahAbAho महाबाहो "hey you the guy with the six-pack"

!**viSNo विष्णो "hey viSNu विष्णु"

!**madho मधो "hey honey"

This /guNa is optional after a neuter.

**madhu मधु "hey honey"

Shouldn't this rule replace with /guNa the he kumAri हे कुमारि made by < ambArthanady...?

No. This sUtra only works when < ambArthanady... doesn't.

The original wording if this sUtra says "replace i u R L with guNa". If your translation were 100% accurate, /pANini would certainly have said idutoguNaH इदुतोगुणः, saving some /mAtrA. Why didn't you translate the "replace R L " part? /pANini clearly intended it to be used.

Because I usually leave the translation of that part as an exercise. I make my students find examples for those.
