@weak middle strong stems

A nounbase can be —

1. before a strong, and then it is bS
2. before a deleted /sup, and then it is /pada (by suptiGantamp... and pratyayalop...)
3. or before a weak affix, and then it is
   • either /pada if the weak is a /valAdi (by svAdiSvasarv...)
   • or whimpy if the weak starts with y य् or ac अच् (by yacibham)

MMW582c3 says that the strong stem of /pathin- is panthan- पन्थन्, the middle stem is pathi- पथिॱ and the weak stem is path- पथ्, what's that jargon mean?

It means that /pathin- turns into —

the strong stem panthan- पन्थन् when bS

the middle stem pathi- पथिॱ when it is /pada

the weak stem path- पथ् when it is whimpy.

Similarly, the strong stem of **rAjan- राजन् is rAjan-, the middle stem is rAja- राजॱ, and the weakest stem is rAjJ- राज्ञ्.
